The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced major changes to the 2026 WASSCE subject combinations, affecting Science, Arts, and Commercial students nationwide.

Key Changes:

Science students can no longer register for Economics.

Arts students studying Literature, Government, or History are also barred from taking Economics.

Only Commercial/Business students can include Economics in their subject list.

General Requirements:

Students must register for 7–9 subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Three compulsory subjects for all students remain:

Options include Animal Husbandry, Carpentry & Joinery, Catering Craft Practice, Data Processing, Garment Making, Photography, Welding & Fabrication, GSM Phone Repairs, Marketing, Plumbing, Tourism, and Upholstery.

Subject Selection Guidelines:

Register the three compulsory subjects.

Choose one trade subject.

Pick 2–5 additional subjects from your category.

Total subjects per student: 8–9

Objective of the Reform:

WAEC states that the new structure aims to streamline academic focus, enhance specialization, and prepare students for future careers and entrepreneurship.

Analysts say it aligns secondary education with global standards and modern curriculum reforms.
